We don't like our hamster anymore

I am very sorry to say that we don't like our hamster anymore.
It has bitten Daisy a couple of times, me at least once, and i think Marc too.
I wore woolly gloves last time i got it out and it tried to bite the gloves.

It is not so much a pet, but a caged animal, as it won't sit in your hands, it just wants to get away, bloody vermin.

I feel the hamster has to go.

He was free, so i shall try to give him away on freecycle.

Trouble is the girls will want another pet, do you think we could get away with a fish?

Sorry to hear the hamster hasn't worked out. Having had guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs, frogs, budgies growing up - no hamsters - my entire childhood with several versions or editions of each I can understand the biting thing. It comes from not having them from really little and not handling them enough consistently from the time they are very small. Sometimes also the overly enthusiastic caresses of small children can also turn animals a bit feral.

I would go with a cat or dog but are there allergy issues? Budgies are good. They don't mind not being handled (although are better if they are consistently) and can be really friendly. You can also teach them to whistle. They are a little noisy and best to get two (or a mirror) so they have company.

Good luck!

Hamsters are evil. It's partly because they're nocturnal and don't like being woken up to play when little girls want a cuddle.

Guinea pigs would be good - your girls are the same age as my older girls and they were ideal until they died of mystery congenital ailments (darn NZ inbreeding!). Alternatively, if you want to keep the cage we also have 5 mice and they are fine with being handled whenever although they do poo a lot. I had all sorts of rodents growing up and was never bitten by either.

Lisa and Sophie, we got rid of the hamster by the way.
A nice man (Via Freecycle) came and collected all the hamster paraphernalia for his 8 year old daughter, hope it works out for him.
He gave me a bottle of red in return.
